BOOK

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The book you are going to read is called:

"The Reality, Now and Understanding"
In order to read this book you use the program "BOOK". This document describes this program.

The program BOOK is used for three purposes:
  1. To read text of a book
  2. To perform the demonstrations (programs) as part as the book
  3. To read the text which explain those programs.

In this chapter is explained how use (operate) the program BOOK and how to do the demonstrations

Paragraph 3.2 explains possible error messages that can be displayed.

Paragraph 6 contains additional information if you are reading the book from diskette.

2.0 THE REALITY, NOW AND UNDERSTANDING

The book you are going to read is called "The Reality, Now and Understanding"

This book consists of three parts:

text, programs and figures

Text is the written part of the book in words.

A central part of the book are demonstrations. Demonstrations are supplied in the form of programs. With each demonstration there is also text.

Some of the demonstrations take a long time. The results of those demonstrations are supplied in the form of figures.

The book "The Reality, Now and Understanding" is subdivided in chapters. There are three types of chapters:

One index chapter. The index chapter is called INDEX.
Text chapters.
Program description chapters.

The way you read the book goes in the following order:

        Index chapter
                Text Chapter A
                        Program description chapter X
                                Program X
                        Program description chapter X
                                Program X
                        Program description chapter X
                Text Chapter A
        Index chapter
                Text Chapter B
                        Program description chapter Y
                                Program Y
                        Program description chapter Y
                Text Chapter B
                        Program description chapter Z
                                Program Z
                        Program description chapter Z
                Text Chapter B
        Index chapter
        etc.

You start from the index chapter. From the index you go to a text chapter. From the text chapter you go to a program description chapter and finally to a program to perform a test, a demonstration or to observe a figure.

And then all the way back to the index chapter, to the next text chapter etc. etc. until you have finished the book.

In the above example you can see that sometimes from one text chapter you can go to more programs. For example you can go from text B to the programs Y and Z.

3.0 OPERATION

In order to read the book you need the following keys:

        UP arrow key
        DOWN arrow key
        PAGE UP key
        PAGE DOWN key
        TAB key
        ENTER key
        H for HELP key
        Esc key
        Home key

The UP arrow key is used to move the text one line forward. The DOWN arrow key is used to move the text one line backward.

The PAGE UP arrow key is used to move the text one paragraph forward. The PAGE DOWN arrow key is used to move the text one line paragraph backward.

The TAB key is used to make a selection.

The ENTER key is to perform (execute) the selections.

The following can be selected with the ENTER key:

A new text chapter.
A new program description chapter
A test
To return to where you came from.

The following colour conventions are used:

Text chapters to be selected are in red.
Tests to be selected are in magenta.
Return back jumps are shown in yellow.

Press H for HELP to see an example of this convention. Almost any key can be used to select the HELP display.

The Esc key has to be used when you are finished with a program and when you want to jump back to the text. The Esc key has to be used when you are finished with the book.

The Home key allows you to return back to the text were you came from. The Home key has the same functionality as the "Return back jump".

3.1 NUMBER IN TOP LEFT CORNER

When you go to a text chapter you will see a number in the top left corner.

This number indicates which line in the text the program BOOK is reading into memory. When the whole text is read in the number will disappear.

Before you can do a demonstration you have to wait until the number disappears. This allows you to easily skip forward and backward between the text and the program.

3.2 ERROR MESSAGES

During program BOOK execution error messages can be displayed. After each error message you can hit any key in order to continue.

The following error messages can be displayed:

  1. " Error - too many text lines ", parameter 1," max = ",parameter 2
This error message can only happen when the system is creating a new index file (See 5.1 Index file) of a text file. The error message means that the text file is too long. Parameter 1 indicates the number of text lines in the text. Parameter 2 indicates the max number of text lines that is allowed. The current value is 1200.

  2. " Error - No match found ", parameter 1

This error message can only happen when you have selected a specific text line of a certain text chapter.

The error message means that the selected is text line is not available in that text chapter. Parameter 1 is the name of the selected text chapter.

The most probably cause is that the index file of the selected text file is out of date and has to be updated (See 5.1 Index file)

    EXAMPLE:
INDEX.TXT GENERAL INDEX TO THE OTHER CHAPTERS AND PROGRAMS
    Try this error message!
    Select the Enter key twice.

  3. " Error - Too many levels ", parameter 1, " max = ", parameter 2

This error message can happen when you select either a text or a program

When you select a text or a program 3 parameters are stored in a stack (Pop Down) and you go one level up. (from 0 to 1 to 2 etc)

When you are finished with a text or a program those three parameters are retrieved from the stack (Pop Up) and you go one level down. The error message means that you went too many levels deep. Parameter 1 indicates the level you are in (probably 11) Parameter 2 indicates the maximum level allowed. Current value is 10.

Under normal usage this error message will not happen. The error message can happen when you select text via LITERAT.TXT i.e. Literature List

  4. " Warning - Maximum level reached ", parameter 1, " max = ", parameter 2

This error message has the same meaning as the previous error message but no error has occured yet.
Parameter 1 indicates the level you are in. Value will be 10.
Parameter 2 indicates the maximum level allowed. Current value is 10.

Solution use Home key more often.

3.3 HOW TO PRINT SIMULATIONS AND FIGURES

If you want to print the screen go back to DOS i.e. ESC

after c:\> enter CD C:\NOW\EXE and ENTER
after c:\now\exe> enter GRAPHICS DESKJET and ENTER
after c:\now\exe> enter BOOK
The best print out results you will get in screen mode 12. Only then a circle on the screen will be printed as a circle.

When the requested screen is displayed select PrtSc

4.0 DEMONSTRATIONS

A central part of the book are demonstrations or tests.

All demonstrations too a large extend have the same appearance and have the same operations.

Each demonstration consists of a number of different tests. In each test different conditions are demonstrated.

Each test consists of the following displays:

"Menu Selection Display"
"Parameter Selection Display"
"Figure Selection Display"
"Test or Demonstration Display"

The "Menu Selection Display" is the initial display.

The easiest way to perform a test is:

enter the number of a specific test
enter S for Start To terminate a test:
select Esc (Escape)

The "Test or Demonstration Display" shows the results of the demonstration in a graphical way.

The "Parameter Selection Display" allows you to modify certain parameters. Standard parameters are:
Delta time
Wait time in seconds
Speed of light (gravity)
File directory name.

Additional parameters are discussed in the text of each demonstration.

The "Figure Selection Display" allows you to select view saved results of simulations.

In many cases the same test is repeated with different parameters. To select the parameters for each of those tests, subtests are defined. You can always override those settings by using the Parameter Selection Display

5.0 DIRECTORIES AND FILES

Text programs and results are stored in four directories: TXT, EXE, FIG and IND

Text is stored in the directory C:/NOW/TXT
All the text files ends with .TXT

Programs are stored in the directory C:/NOW/EXE
All the programs end with .EXE

Results are stored in the directory C:/NOW/FIG
The following programs have results saved:

3OBJECTS, MERCURY, PLANETS, PLANET3D, SUNRAD, THOUGHT6 and FGALAXY

Index files are stored in the directory C:\NOW\IND
All the index files end with .IND

5.1 INDEX FILE

For each text file there is also an index file. Index file contain the offset where each line of text starts. If for some reason a text file is modified then the corresponding index file also has to be modified. In order to do that the index file has to be deleted. The first time that the text is read a new index file will be created.

During this process the following message is displayed in the top left corner:

"Wait" When index file created the following message is displayed in the top left corner:
"Initialisation finished"

5.2 PERFORMANCE

For best performance of the simulations use DOS directly. Do not use WINDOWS. In the file CONFIG.SYS do not include the command for EMM386.

6.0 DISKETTES

The book "The Reality, Now and Understanding" comes in two diskettes

Diskette 1 contains:

        Directory A:\NOW\EXE i.e. all programs
        Directory A:\NOW\TXT i.e. all text
Directory A:\NOW\IND i.e. all index files
Directory A:\NOW\FIG figures of the following programs:
3OBJECTS, MERCURY (some), SUNRAD and THOUGHT6

Diskette 2 contains

Directory A:\NOW\FIG figures of the following programs:
PLANETS, PLANET3D, MERCURY (some) and FGALAXY

If you are reading the book from diskette start with diskette 1 in drive a. As most probably you are already doing.
When you are in a program and you try to read a figure which is not stored on diskette 1 then a system error message is displayed. Replace diskette 1 with diskette 2 and try again. After the figure is displayed, replace the diskette 2 back with diskette 1.

If the wrong diskette is inserted then a system error message and the message "Enter diskette 1" are displayed.
